Why This Review Exists
This review exists because Olaplex gave me crappy customer service. Yes, I’m that petty. I’ve been carrying this chip on my shoulder for about six years, and honestly, it deserves its own post someday.
The short version is this: I bought an Olaplex at-home kit based on their quiz, followed the recommendations, and quickly realized it wasn’t enough product for the amount of hair I have. When I reached out to customer service to ask why the recommendation was what it was, I got a snobby response. I wasn’t complaining, I was asking because I was making a YouTube video and wanted to understand the logic. The product itself worked fine, but I don’t want to think that hard when I’m just trying to give my hair a little extra love.
At the time, there wasn’t anything comparable to Olaplex for at-home bond repair. So I moved on, slightly annoyed, but without many options.
As someone with naturally dark Asian hair who chooses to bleach it blonde, maintenance matters to me. Going from one end of the hair color spectrum to the other comes with damage and breakage, no matter how careful you are. My goal has always been to keep my hair as soft, manageable, and intact as possible.
I tried the K18 Hair Mask because my hairdresser used it on me in the salon. It was a single-step application, which immediately felt more doable than Olaplex’s at-home routine. I was shocked by how simple it was for what it actually does. Less tangling, less dryness, and noticeably better feel in a short amount of time.
My Hair Situation (Context Matters)
I didn’t wake up one day blonde. I eased into it slowly. Highlights turned into balayage, then scalp bleaching, and eventually a more lived-in blonde. Over time, damage happened because, at the end of the day, it’s still chemicals on my head.
I went from a natural level 2 to about an 8 or 9. My hair is still very straight and coarse, but dryness shows up at the ends rather than the scalp. Because of that, my hair tangles easily, especially when it’s compromised. That’s the baseline I’m working from with any repair product.
What K18 Claims to Do (Briefly)
It’s easy to assume the K18 Hair Mask is just another leave-in conditioner. It’s not. Traditional conditioners work on the outside of the hair. K18 is a bond repair treatment that penetrates the inner structure of the hair to mend broken keratin chains caused by bleaching, coloring, and heat.
The idea of a product reversing hair damage sounds almost too good to be true, and to be honest, I didn’t fully understand what it did when my hairdresser first used it on me. I’m not even sure I would have bought it on my own without that experience. There are too many products, too many promises, and it adds up fast.
What pushed me to actually try it at home was seeing how well it worked in the salon and then getting proper education from my hairdresser. That sent me down the K18 rabbit hole, including their other products, which I’ll talk about in future posts.
How I Actually Use the K18 Hair Mask
I usually use K18 the week before a hair appointment. If I remember, I’ll use it once more between salon visits. This is why it fits so easily into my Medium Maintenance life. I wash my hair every two days, and this doesn’t disrupt that rhythm or turn into another recurring obligation.
Step 1:
I shower as usual, but I do not condition my hair. This is genuinely harder than it sounds. I’ve been conditioning my hair for forty years, so muscle memory is real. This is also why I try to do this the week before an appointment. If I forget and condition out of habit, I have buffer days and don’t spiral.
Step 2:
After the shower, I gently towel dry my hair. No aggressive rubbing. I’m not interested in creating extra breakage for sport.
Step 3:
I start with one pump of product and build from there. I used to only need one pump, but as my hair got longer and denser, I now use three. It will absolutely feel like this is not enough product. It is. Trust.
Step 4:
This step matters more than you think. I rub the product between my hands until it looks almost like cartoony sunscreen. Do not finger-comb it through your hair immediately after pumping. That’s when people panic, assume it’s not enough, and over-apply.
Step 5:
Now that my hands look like they’re in a ghost costume, I start at the ends and work the product upward toward the scalp. By emulsifying it first, you’re giving it a real chance to do what it’s designed to do instead of just sitting on the surface.
Step 6:
I let it sit for four minutes. That’s it. You leave it in. I usually use this time to gently brush my hair so the product distributes evenly.
That’s the entire process. It’s so simple it almost feels fake, and what’s even more surprising is how little product you need. I appreciate that this isn’t something I feel pressured to do weekly or monthly. It respects my time, which honestly makes me more likely to keep using it.
Results I Noticed Over Time
After the first use, my hair felt like it went back in time. The ends felt softer and more supple, with noticeably fewer tangles. Overall manageability improved right away.
With continued use, split ends became much less of an issue, and my hair density improved. It didn’t magically make my hair thicker, but it did make it feel healthier and less fragile, which matters when you’re maintaining long blonde long-term.
What This Product Doesn’t Replace
Using the K18 Hair Mask didn’t give me permission to abuse my hair. I still avoid unnecessary heat. I still try to be mindful. While I do think my hair would probably tolerate more than it used to, I don’t see the point in pushing it just to see what happens.
K18 supports good habits. It doesn’t replace them.
Who I Think K18 Works Best For
If you’re Asian and you’ve bleached your hair blonde, I think this product is worth the investment. As an Filipino + American, one thing I noticed over time is that my hair felt thinner as damage accumulated. K18 gives my hair a reset that brings the texture closer to what it used to be.

If you have virgin hair that you already take good care of, I don’t think this product will do much for you. Your hair is already living its best life.
Is It Worth the Price?
I consider any non-essential hair product a luxury. If your budget doesn’t allow for splurging on hair care, don’t. I’m not here to convince you to buy anything. I’m here to share my experience.
That said, I think the K18 Hair Mask is worth every cent. The jumbo size (100 ml) is $120, the full size (50 ml) is $75, and the mini (15 ml) is $29. I personally can’t justify the jumbo for how often I use it. I bought the full size when it became available for home use, and when it sold out, I stocked up on minis.
If the price scares you, start with the mini. That’s the smartest way to test it without commitment.

Where It Fits in My Blonde Routine
The K18 Hair Mask quietly carved out a permanent spot in my haircare lineup. It’s not a weekly obligation, it doesn’t take up counter space, and it doesn’t punish you if you forget about it.
After my experience with the Olaplex at-home kit, this was a welcome replacement. I wasn’t planning to reorder Olaplex anyway, but finding something that worked better meant I didn’t feel like I was missing out.
If I had to quantify it, I’d say I use K18 monthly-ish. My hair appointments are about three months apart. I use it the week before my appointment and, if I remember, one more time between visits.
The Grounded Verdict
I don’t think I’d still be as blonde as I choose to be without help from the K18 Hair Mask. If your hair is naturally dark, maintaining blonde is a lot of stress on your hair. If you’re already investing in the look, it makes sense to invest a little more in protecting that investment.
