K18 Detox Shampoo Review for Bleached Hair (Does It Work?)

K18 has been one of those brands I keep coming back to. Last month, I reviewed HeatBounce so I figured I’d try their Detox Shampoo. I’ve liked a lot of their product line so far, so I figured I only had money to lose. Lol.

I’ve tried other clarifying and detox shampoos in the past, but I’ll be honest, I don’t think I was mature enough to understand the concept of a detoxifying shampoo and how it could benefit my hair. I was either in college or just a young adult who was broke and couldn’t justify the cost of something like this. Also, they never bubbled up the way I like, and I feel like they smelled a little off.

I can’t say for sure though, because I wasn’t planning on having a blog in my 40s.

Now that I’m older and have chosen to actually pay attention to things like my hair, a detox shampoo makes more sense for my personal product lineup. Here is my experience with K18 Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo.

My Hair Situation (Context Matters)

I didn’t wake up one day as a Blonde Asian. I eased into it.

I started with highlights. That turned into balayage, which eventually turned into scalp bleaching. Somewhere along the way, it became more of a lived-in blonde that’s still evolving. But at the end of the day, it’s still chemicals on my head, and damage happened.

I went from a natural level 2 to about an 8 or 9.

My hair is straight and coarse, but dryness shows up mostly at the ends, not the scalp. Before I cut my hair, it would tangle easily at the ends.

That’s the baseline I’m working from whenever I try anything that claims to repair or protect.

K18 Detox Shampoo Review for Bleached Hair (Does It Work?)

Peptide Prep is a shampoo that claims to remove buildup from products, oil, and hard water.

It also claims to detox the hair without stripping it. I remember in the 90s and early 2000s when clarifying shampoos were everywhere. They’re basically a version of detox shampoo, but harsher in my opinion. My hair would feel squeaky clean, but not in a good way. My scalp felt tight, and the next day my hair would already feel oily again.

It’s also supposed to prep the hair for other products. That part makes sense. If your hair is actually clean, other products should work better.

Then there’s the peptide part. This shampoo is supposed to help maintain hair strength while cleansing. I think this comes from people realizing that traditional clarifying shampoos can be kind of harsh.

It’s also marketed as being suitable for all hair types.

How I Actually Use K18 Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo

I use Peptide Prep for a few specific situations.

If my hair feels heavy, that usually means something has built up. I don’t wash my hair every day, so that can be from sebum. I’ll also use it before a blonding appointment to reset everything, and before I need to heavily style my hair for an event. It just makes sense to start from a clean canvas.

This isn’t something I use regularly. I use it when I feel like I need it.

As far as actually using it, I treat it like a normal shampoo. I shampoo twice when I wash my hair. First with a regular shampoo to remove general buildup, then I follow up with Peptide Prep.

Just a warning, it’s a clear charcoal gray color. It has activated charcoal in it, which helps absorb oils and impurities. I was not expecting that and definitely let out a little scream the first time I used it.

After that, I condition like normal and move on with my day.

What I Noticed Over Time

My scalp feels really clean, but still comfortable. I like using this before I know I’m going to style my hair because it leaves it clean without being overly slick or hard to work with. I use this shampoo in combination with other products.

I remember a hairstylist for a friend’s wedding told all the bridesmaids not to wash their hair the day of for easier styling. I’m sorry, I need to wash my hair the day of an event.

I used this shampoo and it was totally fine.

Also, is she the hair police? She never even met us. How would she know how our hair behaves before and after a wash? I mean, this doesn’t really matter for this post, and I could go on a whole tangent about it, but I won’t.

Who I Think This Works Best For

I tend to get oily, and this helps with that, so I’d say it works well for people who deal with buildup or oil.

After about 24 hours, I can feel sebum coming through my scalp. I don’t know why, my hair has just always been like that.

I also think this works really well after heavy styling. It helps bring my hair back to baseline. If I use a regular shampoo after a big styling day, it doesn’t feel as reset.

Is It Worth the Price?

The full size (8.5 oz) is $39, and the mini (1.8 oz) is $14. Apparently there’s also a jumbo size (16 oz) for $59, which I didn’t even know about until recently.

I started with the mini because of my past experiences with detox shampoos. I ended up liking it, so I bought the full size.

Since I don’t use it regularly, it’s lasted a long time. I don’t really see myself needing the jumbo size.

Where It Fits in My Blonde Routine

It fits into my routine because I use it when I feel like I need it.

That might sound a little pretentious, but it’s true.

It’s nice to have, especially when I’m traveling, but my routine doesn’t fall apart if I don’t have it.

If you’re not already using K18 shampoo and conditioner, I’d say start there first. But if you’re committed to something else, this works as a good addition to your lineup.

The Grounded Verdict

I’m no longer afraid of detox shampoos because of K18 Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo.

The 90s and early 2000s were definitely a time. A time when marketing really dictated what I thought I needed for my hair. I was basically raised by television, and I didn’t realize how uninclusive a lot of that messaging was.

My hair is different from my white friends’ hair, which is also different from my African American friends’ hair.

I like that K18 is making products that are meant to work across different hair types, and that their marketing reflects that. It might seem small, but it’s actually a big deal for the version of me that grew up not seeing that.

As a Blonde Asian, that kind of inclusivity and practicality matters to me.

At the same time, this is now just something I keep in my routine for when I feel like I need it. It’s not an every wash product, but when my hair feels heavy or I know I need a reset, I reach for K18 Peptide Prep. When my color needs a reset, this is what I reach for.
