I’ve never intentionally bought a claw hair clip, but I’ve tried enough of them to know how they usually go. In general, I use them to hold my hair up when I blow dry it and can’t find any alligator clips. As a kid, I wore them because everyone else was. My hair never looked right in them. Even back then, I knew my hair was long and there was a lot of it. I was also one of two Asian students at an all-white school, so it’s not like I was seeing examples of how to actually use these things. The clips themselves didn’t help either. Hard plastic, uncomfortable, usually black or that brown tortoise color.
Fast forward to 2025. Like most people, I was scrolling on Instagram and landed on an ad for what looked like a normal hair clip. It was the Cloud Clip. I don’t know why I kept watching, but I did, and I learned this old-school claw clip had been remade with a flexible material that could supposedly be run over by a car and still hold up, while also being comfortable enough for all-day wear.
I still didn’t fully buy in, but then I saw it was made in South Korea, and that got my attention as a Blonde Asian. It was around the holidays, so I bought a bunch of them, planning to keep one and gift the rest. There were a lot of fun colors, so worst case, they were still cute. Best case, I’d be the best friend and sister ever. I started using one as soon as it showed up.
After maintaining long blonde hair for over 10 years, I figured this was a good time to try something like this. I’m always looking for ways to make my life a little more convenient. This is my experience with the Cloud Clip from Mello.
First Impressions

When I pulled them out of the box, they looked like regular claw clips. Nothing special. Then I opened the bag and picked one up. Still looked regular, but I immediately noticed how light it was. Dare I say it felt like a cloud? lol.
Then I did the obvious thing and squeezed it. Hard.
It was surprisingly bouncy and flexible. Way more than I expected. Even with that, I remember thinking there was no way this was going to hold all my hair.
Putting the Cloud Clip in My Hair

Yeah, no. It didn’t hold all my hair, initially.
At the time, my hair was super long, so I already knew I’d have to figure out a different way to use it. I did the usual twist situation, where you swirl your hair up and clip it in place. The clip itself is light, but it takes more effort to open than you’d expect, but not crazy hard. It actually feels pretty substantial, which made it feel like decent quality.
I didn’t wear it for a super long time, but while it was in, it almost felt like nothing was there. I couldn’t feel it digging into my head, which is usually my issue with clips. At one point, I even leaned my head back into a wall just to see how it would flex, and it handled it well.
I have to give it to Mello. Their marketing works, because I definitely caught myself recreating things from the ad just to see if it could keep up.
The Adjustment

Since wearing it “normally” wasn’t really an option with my hair length, I had to adjust. What ended up working was putting my hair into a low ponytail, then twisting that and securing it with the clip.
It worked, and honestly, it gave me a little Nelly Furtado circa 2005 vibe, which I didn’t hate and will never hate.
Waiting for a Larger Cloud Clip
After I bought the Cloud Clip, I started looking through Mello’s Instagram to see what other people were saying. I went straight to the comments because I assumed I wasn’t the only one thinking this.
“Are you going to make a larger version?”
I was right. A lot of people were asking the same thing. I even commented myself and got a reply along the lines of “it’s coming soon.”
So I waited.
Then I saw a post that felt like an announcement. I don’t remember exactly what it said, but it was something like “it’s finally here.” I swiped through, fully expecting a larger version, and instead, it was a smaller one.
I was so bummed.
I get that not everything is made for me, and I’m sure there’s a market for a smaller version, but it just didn’t line up with what I was hoping for. If anything, it would make more sense, for Mello as a company, to release a larger version around the holidays, especially if it ends up being priced higher.
Conclusion
In my eyes, Mello has really changed the game when it comes to hair clips. I actually enjoy the Cloud Clip, which is not something I thought I’d say. It’s comfortable, lightweight, and it does what it claims to do, just not fully for my hair length, yet.
I’m still waiting, on the edge of my seat, for a larger version. That’s really the version of this that would make the most sense for me.
At the same time, this didn’t completely replace what I normally use. Because of how long and heavy my hair is, I still find myself reaching for hair ties when I need something that’s going to hold everything without me thinking about it.
Considering I choose to be high maintenance about my hair, anything that makes my life easier is worth trying. This just ended up being one of those things that works, but in a more specific way than I expected.
