Invisibobble Hair Tie Review: Does Invisibobble Actually Hold Thick, Long Hair

Why I Finally Tried Invisibobble

As we continue moving forward in this hair tie series, I can’t say I’ve never tried Invisibobble. That would be false.

Last week, we took a look at a different coil hair tie. What I can say is my best friend was a huge supporter of Insisibobbles. She gave me a few for Christmas one year. Unfortunately, they were the original ones and they didn’t hold my hair as well as they held hers. I couldn’t really come to the same conclusion she did.

I decided to give Invisibobble another go for this series because:

  1. The enthusiasm my friend had for them
  2. They kept coming up when I searched for hair ties for long, thick hair
  3. It felt only fair to include more than one telephone hair tie if I was testing its cousin.

A Quick Look at the Brand

One of the first questions I had was, which came first, Invisibobble or Teleties?

I didn’t look it up until I started writing, but the answer is Invisibobble!

It was created after a girl in university needed something a little extra for a “bad taste” themed party, so she put a telephone cord in her hair. She had been dealing with headaches from regular hair ties, and when she woke up with the tele cord still in her hair without a headache, that was the moment invisibobble was conceived. When she took it out, the dent wasn’t as bad either.

Honestly, I think the founding story is so legit. It made me want to try this hair tie even more.

What I Bought

I went with the Power Invisibobble, the three-pack in clear. I chose Power because it’s designed for thick hair.

What I Thought Before Trying It

My hair is very long and thick, and after years of bleaching it, I need a hair tie that can comfortably hold it up without causing damage. I already knew my experience with the original version. Since I chose Power, I was hopeful it would work better.

I also didn’t think it was very visually appealing. It reminds me of those coiled keychains retail managers use to keep their keys on them.

I wasn’t familiar with coil hair ties, and since I’m also testing Teleties in this series, I wanted something to compare it to. I ended up using this one first because it arrived first.

What I Found

Hold: The second I put it in place, it held my ponytail up, high and proud. I was honestly in disbelief because it felt so similar to the original at first when I held it. I didn’t have to tighten or redo anything.

Tension: It felt a little tight, but not in a bad way. More like it was doing its job. After a couple uses, that feeling eased up.

Loop Count: I got 3 loops in, which is what I’m used to. It was a tight three, so I had to try more than once to get it right. There was definitely a learning curve since I’ve never used a coil hair tie before.

Weight Handling: It handled the amount and thickness of my hair really well. No adjusting needed. When I took it out, I didn’t get that familiar hair ache.

Durability: It didn’t stretch out in a way that felt permanent. It slowly bounced back after sitting on the counter for a few minutes. Not instantly, but it did reset.

Removal: This is where it gets a little tricky. Sometimes it snagged my hair, sometimes it didn’t. It depended on how I put it in. I remove it by undoing a loop first, then pulling it out.

Dent / Crease: No dent. I was expecting at least something based on how snug it felt, but nothing noticeable. This doesn’t really matter to me so it’s a bonus

All-day Wear Comfort: I can wear this all day and forget it’s there. No tightening, no adjusting.

Versatility: I don’t think it’s very versatile visually. It looks like a coil in your hair. I wouldn’t wear this to something like a wedding. It’s a little clunky.

Wrist Wear: This is where it fails for me. I’m used to keeping a hair tie on my wrist, but because this one holds its shape so well, it feels tight and uncomfortable.

Would I Reach for It Again: I’m happy using the three I have, but I wouldn’t repurchase. Not because it doesn’t work, but because there are more comfortable and convenient options for long, thick hair.

Other Things I Didn’t Expect

I didn’t expect to have to pay attention to how I put it in.

When the coil connects, there’s a small nubbin where it joins. I have to be mindful of where that sits to avoid snagging. I had the most success when that nubbin was tucked into the last loop.

I also have to remember to undo that last loop before pulling it out.

The One Negative

The deciding factor for me was what it did to my wrist.

I have small wrists, and I’m used to always having a hair tie on me. This one left marks and felt uncomfortable enough that it became a dealbreaker.

Conclusion

Going into this, I thought I was just trying to find the ultimate hair tie for thick, long hair. I didn’t realize how much hair ties have evolved since the 90s.

This whole process has me splitting hairs (no pun intended) a little when deciding what’s better than what. It actually makes me a little sad when something doesn’t quite make the cut.

I find much more value in coil hair ties and I do think Invisibobble is the right fit for someone. It’s just not the right fit for me.

I’m trying out lots of different hair ties, so this isn’t the only one I tested.
