Hair Is the Best Makeup I Own

The Moment I Realized Hair Was Doing the Work

I realized pretty early that hair was doing more for my face than makeup ever could.

Even as a child, if I ran a brush through my hair I suddenly looked presentable. My mom liked keeping my hair long because it was easier to style for dance competitions. At the end of every season I would chop it all off, and by the time summer was over it had somehow grown back again.

Once my hair was styled, everything about my face seemed to cooperate.

What Happens When My Hair Looks Good

The easiest way to explain it is that my hair pulls my face together. Like how a rug ties a room together

When my hair is clean, brushed, and styled, my entire aesthetic looks finished. I do not need much else for things to feel balanced.

When my hair is not managed, the opposite happens. I look like a cartoon character that just woke up. It is actually kind of funny how dramatic the difference can be.

Hair frames the face in a way that quietly carries a lot of the visual weight.

If Hair Is the Frame, What Does That Make Skin?

If my hair is the main act, my skin plays a strong supporting role.

I have been fortunate in that my skin has never been particularly difficult. I would get the occasional blemish. I have definitely lost the battle against a few blackheads in my life. But overall my skin has behaved.

As I have gotten older, I have started noticing smaller things that were not there before. The occasional witch hair that appears overnight like it has lived there forever. Skin that does not feel quite as supple as it used to.

Because of that, my skincare routine has quietly existed in the background of my daily routine for years. Nothing earth shattering. I have made small adjustments, whether it’s swapping out a product or using more of it, when something needs attention.

I have a feeling skincare will slowly become more important to me as I age. After all, skin is the largest organ of the human body. It would be silly not to take care of it.

What I Actually Do for My Hair and Skin

Both routines are surprisingly simple.

I wash my hair every other day, sometimes every two days depending on how it feels. My hair ends up getting the most attention because of its length and the color treatment. Being Asian and blonde simply requires a little more care.

My skincare routine is even simpler. I wash my face in the morning with a gentle cleanser and apply moisturizers. The goal is mostly to keep things clean, calm, and functioning.

I invest more time and money into my hair than I do my skin. But skincare is the one thing I do consistently every day.

The Quiet Hierarchy of My Routine

When I think about it honestly, my beauty routine has a clear order:

Hair gets the most time and effort.
Skin gets steady maintenance.
Makeup is super optional.

That order fits naturally with how I approach a Medium Maintenance lifestyle. Some things are worth the effort. Some things just need consistent care. And some things are nice when the moment calls for them but not necessary every day.

Why Hair Comes First

I would rather invest time and energy into keeping my hair healthy than chase the idea of perfect skin or perfect makeup.

Good hair already does a lot of the work. It frames the face, softens things, and somehow makes everything else look more intentional. When my hair looks right and my skin is behaving, the rest of my face does not need much help. Makeup can show up when it wants to, but it has never been the star of the show. If I do wear makeup, it is usually for specific situations like events, performances, or travel. I wrote more about that in my post about my relationship with makeup as a non-daily wearer.

That is probably why my routine quietly organized itself this way over time. Hair gets the most attention. Skin gets steady care. Makeup shows up when the moment calls for it.

I never really thought about my beauty routine until I started writing this blog. I’m not here to convince anyone to change theirs. I’m just here as a quiet reminder that it’s okay if you don’t feel the need to go all in. I know I’m not the only one who approaches it this way.
